Appendix B - Print and Batch Queue Screen

USING THE BATCH QUEUE TO RUN REPORTS OR UPDATE PROGRAMS RUNNING A JOB IN BATCH

It is important you understand what a batch queue is on your computer system. The batch queue  provides the facility that allows you to send a job off to be done independent of the terminal. This facility provides the equivalent of a supervisor delegating work to an employee; the supervisor specifies the work to be done, gives it to the employee, and only receives back a report at completion or discovery that the employee is missing information necessary to complete the process.

Use of the batch processing facilities on your computer will result in freeing your terminal so you can continue on with other types of work. It also preserves computer resources for those users who must use the terminals for their job functions during peak load periods of the day. The batch process normally runs at a lower priority and has a reduced impact on the system.

NOTE: Jobs can be forced to run in batch by coding the appropriate entry for batch force on the batch name in the system profile record. The following screen shows a typical sequence of questions that the user must respond to for all programs that have the option of running at the terminal or in batch.

RUNNING A JOB ON-LINE

If you choose to run a job online your terminal is unavailable until the job has finished processing. This method is NOT recommended for large reports or updates. When run in batch, a log file records the processing. If any errors occur, they are less likely to be missed.

INTRODUCTION

The print and batch queue option screen was created to show everything on one screen, thus eliminating the number of questions you must answer. You can adjust the screen through the use of defaults set up in the Master Profile to further reduce the number of questions.

The screen is grouped into four blocks, one of which is not shown until selected.

NOTE: If you enter a key letter for an option and nothing happens, the current privileges don't allow the option. If possible, change the Master Profile to allow for the option. TSC recommends the user consult the supervisor of the products operation prior to making any changes. There may be a reason for the restriction.

SECTION (A)

BATCH QUEUE/PRINT QUEUE

If you want to change the default print or batch queue displayed, enter 'A' at the prompt at the bottom of the screen. Assuming you are able to access this option, your cursor should move to Section A, and you should see the batch queue default flash or the print queue default flash. If the print queue default is flashing, you don't have privileges to change the batch queue default.

<CR> when finished changing the options.

BATCH QUEUE DEFAULT

Use the <UP> and <DOWN> arrows to select the batch queue you want to use or use the

<RIGHT> arrow to move to the print queue section. If the <RIGHT> arrow doesn't work, you are not authorized to change the print queue options.

PRINT QUEUE DEFAULT

Use the <UP> and <DOWN> arrows to select the print queue you want to use or use the

<LEFT> arrow to move to the batch queue section. If the <LEFT> arrow doesn't work, you are not authorized to change the batch queue options.

SECTION (B)

CHANGE OPTIONS SPECIFIC TO EACH BATCH OR PRINT QUEUE

To change the options specific to the print or batch queue you select, enter 'B' at the prompt at the bottom of the screen. Assuming you are able to access this option, your cursor should move to Section B and you will be asked to change the following options:

BATCH QUEUE

PRINTER FOR LOG

Enter the print queue you want the log file to be printed on.

<CR> to accept the current value displayed. This option is valid only when running a report to batch. (DO NOT SPECIFY A DISK DEVICE)

HOLD

Enter 'Y' if you want the batch job to be held until you release it manually at a later date.

<CR> to use the current value displayed. (Option valid only when running a report to batch.)

DELETE

Enter 'Y' if you want the batch log to be deleted after completion or <CR> to use the current value displayed. TSC does NOT recommend use of this option. If used, print out all log files. This option is valid only when running a report to batch.

PRINT

Enter 'Y' if you want the batch log to be printed after completion or <CR> to use the current value displayed. Valid only when running a report to batch.

NOTIFY

Enter 'Y' to have the system to announce when the batch job has completed or <CR> to use the current value displayed. This option is valid only when running a report to batch.

PRINT QUEUE

HOLD

Enter 'Y' to hold the report in the print queue until released manually at a later date or <CR> to use the current value displayed.

DELETE

Enter 'Y if you want the report to be deleted from the disk after it has been printed. TSC recommends you don't use this option on the chance that your printer is not set up properly or another failure results in the loss of the report. This is important for reports which are difficult to recreate because they are part of update processes.

If you choose 'N', then you must look after deleting these files later.

SECTION (C)

CHANGE DATE AND TIME OR NUMBER OF COPIES

To change the date and time or number of copies, enter 'C' at the prompt at the bottom of the screen. If you are not running to batch and your output is to disk, you will not be able to enter this option. Assuming you may enter this option, your cursor should move to Section C. Enter the number of copies you want (if not to disk) then enter the date and time you want the job to run (if running in batch).

SECTION (F)

CHANGE THE FORM TO BE USED DURING PRINTING

If you want to change the form that the report is to use, enter 'D' at the prompt at the bottom of the screen. If the report is running to disk or screen, you may not enter this option. Assuming you may enter this option, your cursor should clear Section B and draw in Section

  1. Use any of the arrow keys to select the form of your choice. Forms are set up in the Global Systems Parameter menu.

NOTE: If you specify a form that is not set up on the print queue of your choosing, then the printout will be on hold state until the form is set up on the print queue.

INTRODUCTION

The print and batch queue setup appears as a banner across the top of every program that requires you to specify job processing parameters. This banner will automatically be set to the defaults setup through the application Master Profile. Any changes made using the batch queue utility remain in effect until you change options or end the current session.

NOTE: You may change your batch or print queue any time during data entry.

NOTE: If you enter an option and nothing happens, it's because the current privileges don't allow the option. If possible, change the master profile to allow for the option. TSC recommends you consult the supervisor of the products operation before making any changes. There may be a reason for the restriction.

To gain access to the batch queue setup banner, use the <PF1> or <GOLD> key, then Q from any prompt. This will produce a highlighted box in the upper left hand corner. To move the highlighted box around use the <RIGHT> <LEFT> <UP> <DOWN> arrows to move in the desired direction. When the section to be changed is highlighted press <SELECT>. Once pressed a window will appear below the queue banner. Use the <UP> <DOWN> arrows to change the options from the defaults. With the new option highlighted, you must press <CR> for the queue attributes to be changed.

You may exit the queue banner by pressing <CR>.

PROCESSING

The processing option allows you to specify how the job is to be performed (online or batch). If the job must be done in batch, the processing option will allow you to specify which batch queue is to be used.

OUTPUT

The output option allows you to specify where your reports will be sent. This device may be a printer, the screen or a hard disk. Due to the nature of some processing, the output option will change automatically, depending on the processing option selected.

COPIES

The copies option may only be changed if the output device is a printer. This option allows you to make multiple copies.

RUN TIME

This option allows you to change the date and time a batch job will run. (Option only available to jobs run in batch.)

FORM

This option allows you to select a specific form for output. This option is only available when the output device selected is a printer. Forms are set up on the global systems parameter menu.

OTHER

This option allows you to specify special details or attributes that apply to batch options and print options. The arrow keys allow movement between options; by pressing <SELECT> you may change the attributes.
