Print & Batch Queue Screen - Method 2

Using the Batch Queue to Run Reports or Update Programs

Running a Job in Batch

It is important you understand what the batch queue is on your computer system. The batch queue provides the facility which allows you to send a job off to be done independent of the terminal. This facility provides the equivalent of a supervisor delegating work to an employee, where the supervisor specifies the work to be done, gives it to the employee, and only receives back a report at completion or upon discovery that the employee is missing information which is necessary to complete the process.

Use of the batch processing facilities on your computer will result in freeing your terminal so that you can continue on with other types or work. It will also preserve computer resources for those users who must use the terminals for their job functions during the peak load periods of the day. The batch process normally runs at a lower priority and therefore, has a reduced impact on the system.

NOTE:  Jobs can be forced to run in batch by coding the appropriate entry for batch force on the batch name in the system profile record. The following screen shows a typical sequence of questions which the user must respond to for all programs which have the option of running at the terminal or in batch.

Running a Job On-Line

If you choose to run a job online your terminal is unavailable until the job has finished processing. This method is NOT recommended for large reports or updates. When run in batch, a log file records the processing. If any errors occur, they are less likely to be missed.

introduction

The print and batch queue setup appears as a banner across the top of every program that requires you to specify job processing parameters. This banner will automatically be set to the defaults setup through the application Master Profile. Any changes made using the batch queue utility remain in effect until you change options or end the current session.

NOTE:  You may change your batch or print queue any time during data entry.

NOTE: If you enter an option and nothing happens, it's because the current privileges don't allow the option. If possible, change the master profile to allow for the option. We recommend you consult the supervisor of the products operation before making any changes. There may be a reason for the restriction.

To gain access to the batch queue setup banner, click print options

You may exit the queue banner by pressing OK,

PROCESSING

The processing option allows you to specify how the job is to be performed (online or batch). If the job must be done in batch, the processing option will allow you to specify which batch queue is to be used.

Output

The output option allows you to specify where your reports will be sent. This device may be a printer, the screen or a hard disk. Due to the nature of some processing, the output option will change automatically, depending on the processing option selected.

Copies

The copies option may only be changed if the output device is a printer.

This option allows you to make multiple copies.

Run Time

This option allows you to change the date and time a batch job will run. This option is only available to jobs run in batch.

Form

This option allows you to select a specific form for output. This option is only available when the output device selected is a printer. Forms are set up on the global systems parameter menu.
