Print & Batch Queue Screen - Method 1

Using the Batch Queue to Run Reports or Update Programs

Running a Job in Batch

It is important you understand what a batch queue is on your computer system. The batch queue provides the facility that allows you to send a job off to be done independent of the terminal. This facility provides the equivalent of a supervisor delegating work to an employee; the supervisor specifies the work to be done, gives it to the employee, and only receives back a report at completion or discovery that the employee is missing information necessary to complete the process.

Use of the batch processing facilities on your computer will result in freeing your terminal so you can continue on with other types of work. It also preserves computer resources for those users who must use the terminals for their job functions during peak load periods of the day. The batch process normally runs at a lower priority and has a reduced impact on the system.

NOTE:  Jobs can be forced to run in batch by coding the appropriate entry for batch force on the batch name in the system profile record. The following screen shows a typical sequence of questions that the user must respond to for all programs that have the option of running at the terminal or in batch.

Running a Job On-Line

If you choose to run a job online your terminal is unavailable until the job has finished processing. This method is NOT recommended for large reports or updates. When run in batch, a log file records the processing. If any errors occur, they are less likely to be missed.

Introduction

The print and batch queue option screen was created to show everything on one screen, thus eliminating the number of questions you must answer. You can adjust the screen through the use of defaults set up in the Master Profile to further reduce the number of questions.
The screen is grouped into four blocks, one of which is not shown until selected.

NOTE:  If you enter a key letter for an option and nothing happens, the current privileges don't allow the option. If possible, change the Master Profile to allow for the option. We recommend the user consult the supervisor of the products operation prior to making any changes. There may be a reason for the restriction.
