Certificate Class Code Database Maintenance
The key to using the certification sub system is the use of certificate type and certificate class codes. These codes allow you to enter a wide variety of certificates through one standard screen. Teaching certificates, first aid certificates, diplomas, degrees, masters and doctorates can be entered using the same screen yet extracted individually by like types through proper use of certificate type and class codes.
Certificate type codes are used to broadly group like certificates together. Possible certificate type codes could include personal training and certificates. Certificate Class Codes are used to more specifically group like certificates together. Certificate class codes could include diploma, degree, masters and doctorate etc. The final level of definition is the certificate code itself. Each certificate code ties back to its corresponding class and type code. When entering certificates, the only one of these three codes that you have to worry about is the certificate code. The other two codes are known from the certificate code definition.
Once these three database items are defined, you can extract information from the certificate file in a way that will produce extremely useful reports. Below is a table showing some possible relationships between certificate types, classes and codes.
Certificate Type Code | Certificate Class Code | Certificate Code |
---|---|---|
Post Secondary Training | Diploma | CIS |
Business Degree | BA, BSC | |
Masters | MBC, MBSC | |
Certifcate | Teaching Certifcate | Professional, Standard, Letter |
First Aid Certificate | Industrial 1, Industrial 2 |
Based on the above relationships you could extract all employees having a certificate class code equal to Teaching Certificate to find all certified teachers. You could extract all employees having a certificate class code equal to First Aid Certificate or you could be more specific in your query by specifying a certificate code of Industrial 1. You could be very general in your query by listing all employees with a certificate type code equal to Post Sec Training to find all employees who have had any level of post secondary training. You could be a little more specific in your query by specifying a certificate class code of Degree. Be even more specific by specifying a certificate code of BSC.
By specifying any of these three levels of classification (type, class, and code) you can be as general or specific in your report queries.
